The English learning this week is all about instructions. You’ll read different instruction texts, identify the key features of instructions and then apply what you have learned to compose your own instructions. In maths, you will develop your understanding of shape and symmetry. This will include comparing and classifying 2-D shapes, including quadrilaterals, comparing and classifying different types of triangles (including isosceles and scalene) and using all of your learning to problem solve.  In science, you can find out more about ecosystems and in RE you can discover where Muslims worship and what the festivals of Islam are. Develop your Spanish speaking by learning how to describe the weather and learn how to clap to the pulse of a song in music.

On World Oceans Day, people all around our blue planet celebrate and honour our ocean, which connects us all. World Ocean Day for Schools have bought together the wonder of the ocean to our homes. They’ve got an interactive line up for you to enjoy throughout the day with live ocean films, science lesson, music performances and more. Have a look at their website to find out more:

Did you know that there are many species of dolphins that can be seen in the waters around the UK? Would you like to learn more about these sociable animals? Read the All About Dolphins attached at the bottom of this page to discover some fascinating facts.

Carry out your own research on one (or several) aquatic species. What fascinating facts can you find out about your chosen animal? Where does it live? How has it adapted to life in the water? You could create a poster, annotated drawing or information booklet all about your chosen animal. You could even create some fact cards.

Springwatch 2020

Springwatch is back! Springwatch 2020 has begun and aims to bring you inspiring stories from the natural world. You can catch-up on any episodes you’ve missed and explore the galleries of amazing, up-close images of wildlife as well as view live wildlife cameras. The new series started on 26 May and will run until 12 June. If you are interested in wildlife, you can join presenters Chris Packham, Gillian Burke and Lolo Williams at 8pm Tuesdays through to Fridays on BBC Two. The programme will broadcast from locations across the UK.

Look out of your window. What wildlife can you see? When you are enjoying exercise outside, take a moment to stop and listen and observe. What birds can you see? Do you know how to identify different birds? Click on the link below to help you:

Become a bird-watcher and make a tally of the different birds you see. There’s a sheet attached at the bottom of the page to help you.

The Ickabog Illustration Competition

It’s competition time again! J.K. Rowling (author of the Harry Potter novels) is publishing an original story, ‘The Ickabog’, online over seven weeks, but she needs your help to illustrate the story. She is inviting children to create the illustrations for her. How exciting! A new instalment of the story and illustration themes will be revealed daily so stay tuned. 34 winning illustrations will be used in a printed version of the story when it is printed in full, which is intended for November 2020. The competition is now open and entries will close at 6pm on Friday 17 July.

If you are a winner, your illustration will be features in ‘The Ickabog’ and you will receive a copy of the book signed by J.K. Rowling herself. You will also receive £500 worth of Hachette children’s books for a school or library of your choice. What a great prize!

Before you start sketching, make sure that you read the illustration instructions carefully. If you do not follow these instructions, your entry will be disqualified.

The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis

Our text for this half term is The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe. In this classic tale, four children are send to the countryside during wartime. They discover the magical world of Narnia through a wardrobe. Watch the book trailer to get inspired!

What are your initial thoughts about the book? What puzzles you? Make a note of the questions you have. What do you think will happen in the story? What are your thoughts on the characters? Write your prediction.

Lucy, the youngest of the four children, stepped through the wardrobe into Narnia. Put yourself in her shoes and imagine how she felt. Watch the clip to help you.

We’d like you to get creative and describe her experience.  Can you write this as a story starter? Remember to reveal her thoughts and feelings. Use your senses to describe what she can see, hear and smell. Think carefully about the vocabulary you select – be ambitious. Don’t forget to re-read your writing and take time to edit and improve as well as proof-read for any spelling and punctuation errors. Share your story with someone at home.
